Bertem radar station
The radar station in Bertem consists of two towers situated at 350 meters from each other: a main tower and a back-up tower. The radar in Bertem covers an area with a radius of 260 km (Paris-Dover-Leeuwarden-Frankfurt) up to a height of 60,000 feet (almost 20 km). Bertem has a primary and a secondary radar. The primary radar provides information about the distance, the flight direction and the aircraft speed. The secondary radar emits pulses to which a transponder aboard the aircraft responds by providing data about height, identification and possible emergency reports.
