Recruitment exam - Selection 2017
Candidate air traffic controllers are recruited by means of a competitive recruitment exam consisting of a number of eliminatory tests.
- Planning of the tests:
- FEAST I – 06/11/2017 until 01/12/2017
- FEAST II – 04/12/2017 until 22/12/2017
- Interview panel and English oral – 01/02/2018 until 28/02/2018
- Group assessment – 01/03/2018 until 30/03/2018
- Medical exam – in April 2018
- The dates above are for indication.
- This recruitment exam will possibly lead to the ATCO-training. This training is dispensed in English and will be partially held in Malmö (Sweden). In total the ATCO-training takes about 2 to 3 years.

Attention ! The language in which you apply here, either Dutch or French, is the language that will be used during the whole selection process. If you have a diploma in any other language than Dutch or French you still have to choose between Dutch or French.
Before you apply, please have the following documents close at hand:
- your curriculum vitae;
- your identity card, passport or similar document (both sides);
- evidence of a clean criminal record issued in 2017;
- a copy of the secondary school diploma or higher;
- if required, evidence of compliance with military service regulations.

Admission conditions and prerequisites - Selection 2017
To participate in the recruitment exams, you must:
- Be Belgian or citizen of the European Union;
- Submit evidence of a clean criminal record in compliance with the requirements of the function;
- Enjoy full civil and political rights;
- Comply with the military service regulations (if available and if required);
- Be at least 18 years old and maximum 25 years old;
- Be the holder of a higher secondary school diploma (or equivalent, such as a provisional certificate handed out in Belgian schools to recently graduated students);
- Holders of a non-Belgian higher secondary school diploma (or equivalent) that is declared equivalent to the Belgian diploma by the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (declared equivalent in the Dutch language by the Flemish Community ) or by the Service des Equivalences de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (declared equivalent in the French language by the French Community) are also invited to participate in the exam.
- Candidates who obtained their diploma outside of Belgium and who have not yet obtained the certificate of equivalence for their diploma can register for the exam with reservation. To be able to participate in the exam proof of the request for a certificate of equivalence must be submitted at the latest on the last day of the registration period. The attention of the candidates is drawn to the fact that the procedure to obtain a certificate of equivalence is fairly lengthy. Therefore, candidates are advised to contact the competent authorities without delay. At least be holder of a higher secondary school diploma or equivalent.
- Having command of one Belgium's national languages (either French or Dutch) and of English is an inherent part of the job of air traffic controller;
- Be prepared to undergo a medical examination. In order to give you an idea of the examination criteria, please consult the following document: -> Medical Requirements;
- Have the following qualities: motivation, perseverance, stress resistant, team player (24hours a day), an aptitude for analytical thinking, a good capacity of judgement, a sense for synthesis as well as a high level of concentration.
The air traffic controller works in a technological, dynamic and flexible environment where responsibility and professionalism are the priorities. This means flexible working hours, but also a genuine development of the employees' personality and a very attractive salary plus a very interesting social benefit schemes.
Career prospects are interesting and varied: expert or manager in the Departments ATS Operations or ATS Strategy and Planning, instructor in our Training Centre or a representative of the company in international forums.
To become an air traffic controller (ATCO – Air Traffic Control Officer), you need dedication and personal commitment. Our training plan will help you to reach your peak.
The training to become an air traffic controller comprises two important successive phases:
- The Initial Training (IT) which consists of:
- The Basic Training (BT): this phase enables the candidate to become acquainted with aviation and his or her future working environment in the broad sense of the term. The theoretical part includes, among others, aviation law, aircraft and flight rules, meteorology, operational procedures. For practice, the candidate will work on the first exercises in the simulators.
- The Rating Training (RT): the actual qualification training after which the candidate will obtain an air traffic controller licence for training purposes (Student Licence). During this phase, the candidate will specialize to become a ‘tower air traffic controller' (ADV/ADI), an ‘approach air traffic controller' (APS) or an ‘en-route air traffic controller' (ACS). Once the candidate has obtained the student licence, he or she can start the second phase of the training programme:
- The Unit Training (UT) which will allow the candidate to control the real air traffic under supervision of an OJTI (On the Job Training Instructor), provided he or she has a valid medical aptitude certificate and complies with the linguistic requirements. At the end of the second phase, the candidate air traffic controller obtains a European air traffic controller licence, which stipulates the mentions regarding his or her competences and received training.
